Running Blackfish Reports

Fishermen,

The Barbara Anne is now actively fishing for blackfish and sea bass. The sea bass remains strong with some days being better than others and the black fishing started out extremely strong indicating a very good sign moving forward. Please visit our announcements on our blog page. The inshore sea bass fishery is still accessible even under the current federal closure. The federal closure of sea bass concerns all fishing done from three miles offshore and beyond which then becomes primarily a winter fishery. Those dates are from October 11th-Nov. 1st. However, we will be actively sea bass fishing without interruption with our permit, which allows for the harvest of sea bass during the federal closure. The following is open boat dates regarding black fishing and sea bass. I will now extend the open boat option into the month of November unless a charter is requested. Again, every Tues and Thurs in the month of November will be reserved for open boat fishing. This option has seemed to be very effective in allowing individuals to come fishing without the burden of arranging a four-pack charter. As a side note, I am running an open boat this Thursday due to the current forecast. If interested in an open boat date, you can contact Capt. Anthony for updates at the below information.
Now is the time to book a prime date for the fall blackfish. Don’t wait until the fishing heats up and get shut out of a date. Rods and tackle included in fare: All white crabs are supplied free of charge along with sinkers and rigs.

Running reports

10/9/10

We had the Greg Vongas Charter out for a day of blackfishing with us. The current was screaming as we have just come off a new moon. We did manage 35 fish up to 10lbs with a ton of shorts in the mix. All were caught using green crabs. All in all a favorable day! Thanks guys and hope to see you again. It great fishing with you!

10/11/10

We had an open boat blackfish trip today and we managed to pick fish on every move. Thats a good indication for the weeks to come. We ended the day with 25 fish up to 8lbs and a handful of seabass along with a 32" striper.

10/18/10

We had an open boat today and the fishing was a pick all around. We started the day with some jugs on the bass and managed to jig a few in the boat. Leaving that, we went sinker bouncing for some bottom dwellers. We managed to put 20 tog in the boat to 8lbs along with 30 seabass to 2 1/2 lbs. Also, we had a few bass for the table to round out the catch.

Recreational and commercial fishermen will be demonstrating on vessels off Martha's Vineyard on August 26

Recreational and commercial fishermen will be demonstrating on vessels off Martha's Vineyard on August 26 to direct President Obama's and the national media's attention to the severe negative impacts of the policies and attitudes of the people in control of NOAA/NMFS on recreational and commercial fishermen and on the businesses that depend on fishing. The press release below explains what the demonstration is all about.

If you agree with the purpose of the demonstration, and if you are still committed to making federal fisheries management as fisherman-friendly as it is fish-friendly, please take the time to go to http://fs16.formsite.com/FixMagnusonNow/form683807020/index.html?1282743543045, fill in the on-line petition and, following the instructions at the bottom of the page, send it directly to the White House (or send your own message, if you think that more appropriate). And then please remember to go back to the petition and submit it.

This is a simple process, requiring at most 5 minutes. Taking another step to address the train wreck the federal fisheries management has been turned into is surely worth that much of your time, isn't it?

The petition will be up at least through September. Please get as many other interested people as possible to sign on. Your future on the water - and your ability to fish - depends on it.

Thank you very much.
Nils Stolpe

This is a time of year when all species start to migrate into deeper water as these wrecks can really hold some quality fish.. Come join us for this exciting new schedule, as you wont be disappointed!

OFFSHORE 30-MILE RUNNING REPORTS:

September 6th: Trip cancelled because of Hurricane

9/11/10

Our first 30 mile offshore wreck trip proved to be a great success! We had 80 seabass to 5lbs, codfish to 10 lbs and ling to 3-4 lbs. We fished in different area ranging from 90 ft to 195 ft. Our next set of trips is on tap for 9/20and 9/27; weather permitting.

9/26/10

We returned from our 2nd Offshore wreck trip and was not dissappointed. The only disappointment was the weather in which they called for 2-3 ft seas with 3-5's being the norm. The wind was supposed be north east 10-15 . More along the lines of 15-20 all day. On to the rewards for our efforts. We had over 100 ling between 3-4 lbs(almost identical size wise to the last trip), 15 cod up to 14 lbs, 50 cbass up to 3.5 lbs, 4 winter flounder, 2 fluke and a few tog. Just a great day!.

10/8/10

We were finally able to sail on our 3rd offshore wreck trip and the fishing was less than stellar with cross currents all day. Their was very good life on all wrecks but evrything seemed to shrink. We fished 12 different wrecks and just couldnt put it together. The moon and the the northeast blow really quelled the offshore fishing. We ended the day with 75 seabass , a handful of ling, 1 tog and no cod.

We have been able to get out on 2 out of the 4 trips and both proved to be successful. These trips have really been a big success with you guys and the interest has made me consider a schedule for the month of October which should be an even better month with fall migration underway. We possess the RSA Permit for seabass. There will be NO SEA BASS CLOSURE for the BARBARA ANNE.

Here is the following schedule of upcoming trips (12 HR Wreckathons) Super Sundays and Wednesdays

Sunday

10/13
10/10
10/17
10/24
10/31

Wednesdays

OPEN BOAT BY RESERVATION ONLY!

Call for pricing. As a note, we will sail with 3 people as an adjustment to price will be made at the discaptain. All increases based on number of people will be presented to those on board and we will make a decision together.

Fluke and Seabass Running Reports!

Yu
6/1/10

We headed out for a day of seabassing with Mo anf fmoriends and a good day was had by all. The group combined for 70 seabass to 3 lbs and 15 ling along with a 20lb striped bass. Despite unfavorable conditions due to the south wind, a good day was made and the boys went home with a cooler full of fish.

6/8/10

We had the Paul Barry group out for day of sea bassing and they manged to put a catch together with the group landing a 100 seabass to 4 lbs and a basket of ling to round out the catch. All in all not a bad day fo 4 people.

6/11/10

We had the Mo group outfor a day of cbassing and the day turned out to be good with knotheads to 3 1/2lbs. The group managed 100 keepers for the day with a basket of ling.

6/14/10

pWe had an open boat seabass trip for regulars Bob, Horst, Frank and friend and the fishing was good again with catching our limits again to 3 1/2 lbs. A total of 100 fish hit the deck with no ling this time around. With the exception of an impeller issue, the day was very good.

6/15/10

We repeats Horst Bob lou and joe out for a day of seabassing and the fishing was not as good today with the group combining for 75 keeper sea bass up to 3 lbs and no ling. Cant beat em up everyday!

6/18/10

The fishing was a little tougher with some more shorts mixed in but we did manage 50 keepers to 2 1/2 lbs with a basket of pbaseball bat sized ling to spice up the catch
The fishing overall was a little slower as the short to keeper ratio was a little higherbut still a good day by anyones standards

6/22/10

The fishing started out as a pick on smaller fish but a move to another area produced our near limit of seabass to 3 lbs with some ling and tog mixed in. Total for the day was 70 seabass.

6/25/10

We had the mo group out for another day of cbassing and the group put 60 cbass in the cooler up to 5 lbs. in the mix, we had 2 keeper cod and some ling as well.

6/29/10

Fishing remains to be strong with a slightly better average per pound. We had fish to 5 lbs today with the average around 2-2 1/2lbs. We ended the day for the guys with 75 fish to 5lbs.

7/6/2010

We had our first fluke trip and to say the least it was a productive day on fish between 16-19" with 2 fish between 21-22". The guys ended the day with a 35 fish tally. A very nice start to the season and this will only get more intense as the weeks pass.

7/8/10

We decided to try a different area and the move really never panned out the way we intended. The fish have not really set up in there yet but it should bust open within the next week or just after this moon. The guys ended the day 20 fish up to 5lbs with a few real small flatties mixed in.

7/9/10
We had the usual tuesday group out for a day of fluking and the fishing was ok. We ended the day with 28 fish up to 5lbs. Bait and bucktails were used.

7/12/100

We had a bucktail trip that got cut short due to the weather. We really never got the chance to bounce the bucktails the way we should. Conditions deteriated quickly as the rain and wind did not let up.

7/15/10 PM trip

We had the Bill group out for an afternoon of fluking and had steady action until the sun went down. We ended the day with 25 fish up to 4lbs.

7/19/10

We had the Tom Group out for a day of fluking and had a steady pick all day with a total of 35 fish up to 7.75lbs as Frank Robisky became our derby leader.

7/20/10
We had the Alex group out for a day of flukingand again it was a steady pick with fish up to 8lbs. Capt John joined the group and was rewarded with an 8lb flattie. We ended the day with 30 fish.

7/21/10

We had the Moody group out for a day of fluking and the fishing was off from the previous trips. We saw both size and quantity off with 25 fish coming to the boat and the largest going 3 1/2 lbs. All in all nice day out with some real good guys. Both bait and bucktails produced fish

7/23/10

We had the Flemming Group out for a day of fluking. We took a ride to a new area in the ocean and when we got there, we were greeted with less than favorable conditions in waybof drifting. Without a drift, fluking was almost non-existant. With not much left of the tide, we decided to wait it out for the start of the ebb. Glad we did as we started to pick and with the tide came some wind. We picked some quality seabass as well as fish in upper 4lb range were boated. Total for the day was 20 fluke to 5.8lbs and and 15 keeper seabass to 4.7 lbs.

7/25/10

We had the Don Smalligo Group out for a day of fluking and had 20-25 fish up to 2 1/2 lbs. We fished the channel area around ambrose.

7/27/10

We had open boat regulars Bob,Horst,John and Alex out for a day of fluking and it seemed that a new body of fish moved in as all their bellies were white and the size improved greatly. Most fish were between 18.5-21 in. The group ended the day with 35 fish up to 3lbs and another 35 smaller fish. We stayed in Ambrose Channel.

7/28/10

We had the Alex Z. Group out for a day of combo fluke and sea bassing. The day was productive from start to finish as the boys managed 30 fluke up to 6.4 lbs and 40 sea bass up to 4 1/2 lbs. Constant action throughout the day with lots of fillets for the table

7/30/10

We Scott and the ESPN Crew out for a day of fluking and what a day it was. The boys managed to land a 6.75lb flattied to take second on the leader board for our 1st annual derby. In additon, 55 fluke were caught with several fish in the 4-5 lb range. Great day all around!

8/3/10

We had Alex, Louie, Horst and Frank out for a day of fluking and another good day was had by all. Many fish in the 3-5lb range with the largest going 7.4 lbs for Alex L. He is now in second place in our derby. Total for the day was 47 fish to 7.4lbs.

8/4/10

We had the Alex group out for a day of fluking and seabassing. As we made our way to the grounds the wind was pretty steady @ 20-25 mph with a decent ground swell. We decided to abandon the seabass idea and concentrate our efforts fluking. The fluking remained dencent on the numbers of fish but the size wasnt as good as the largest was 3 lbs

8/6/10

We had the Mo group out for a day of fluking and it was a grind all day with a total of 34 fish hitting the deck and the largest going around 2 3/4lbs. The moon is approaching and has the fish a little skittish. Overall, enough action to make it worth it.

8/7/10

We had regulars Bob sinker, Alex L., Vinny l and Bob Long out for a day of fluking and the day was slow going with 30 fish and another 6 lost at the boat.

8/8/10
We had Tom, David and son out for a day of fluking and was just terrible fish with only 15 fish and nothing of size. Hopefully the downside of the moon will change some of the fishing.

8/9/10

Wehad the Horst charter out for a day of fluking and again it was just a very slow pick with only 13 fish and a couple of seabass. Tomorrow we will try a totally different area.

8/10/10

We had open boat regulars Alex L.& Friend, John Maher & Eddie out for a day of fluking. The fishing again was a pick as we tried another area to the east. We did see a pair of 6lb fish as a total of 18 fish were boated. With the new moon behind us, we should see an uptick in both quantity and quality.

8/13/10

We had an open boat trip today and the fishing was just bad as the conditions turned sour. We had a shot as the tide changed but with the change of tide came a change in the wind. We ended the day with 21 fish up to 3 lbs.

8/14/10

We had Bob, Bob Long, Joe and friend out for a day of tournament fishing on the Barbara Anne and we placed third with a 6lb fish We fished an area loaded with 17-20in fish and ended the day with 45-50 fish to 6lbs.

8/25/10

Finally after 1 1/2 weeks of being drydocked for cracked mounts, severed bolts on the drivesaver, and a bad cutlass bearing , we were back at again for the Horst Group gor a day of fluking and found tbe worst life of the year as 4 days of east winds really clamped down on the fishing. We worked areas from the channel out to the mud buoy and could not get anything started. Too few fish for the effort.

8/26

We had the Michael P. Family out for a day of seabassing. With the fluke fishing being less than stellar we opted to go sra badsing instead as that proved to be the right move. We fished the mud area for 60 seabass up to 3 1/2 lbs. In addition, there are plenty of fluke in the 17-17.75in range. Perfect for our RSA permit fishing.

9/1/10

We had the Alex group out for a day of seabassing and it was a pick all day with the boys catching 60 cbass to 3 1/2lbs. The best life was in around 40-50ft. Fresh skimmers were the ticket

9/7/10

We had the Timmy group out for a day of bluefishing and what a day it was with iver 100 fish coming to the rails. The fish were on average 8-9lbs with the largest around 13lbs. Real true gorillas. We werent even on anchor set in and we had 3 and 4 fish on. Great fishing and should remain that way for the balnce of the fall.

9/11/10

We had our first 30 mile wreck trip it what a succes it was! We had 80 cbass to 5lbs and 20 codfish to 10 lbs, and ling to 4lbs. We fished in area ranging from 90 ft to 195 ft. All in all a very good day.

2010 SEA BASS SEASON EXTENSION

I did not want to post anything on till I heard from a source about the black sea bass season being extended for this year. From what I have been told, the season will be extended for 90 more days and will consist of these time periods for the recreational / for-hire industry for 2010:

OPEN - MAY 22nd - OCTOBER 15th

CLOSED - OCTOBER 16th - OCTOBER 31st

OPEN - NOVEMBER 1st - DECEMBER 31st

Capt. Adam Nowalsky reports that the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission met on Tuesday and approved a revised black sea bass of May 22 to Oct. 1 and then from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31.

The reason for the revised sea bass season was that 2009 landings data show a lot fewer black sea bass were caught than NMFS had estimated.

Each state will have to approve the new sea bass season. Size and bag limits will remain the same

Barbara Anne Running Striped Bass Reports 2010

Just imagine jumping on a party or charter boat, and going out and catching striped bass between 15 - 25 lbs on till you cried uncle, just a mile or two off the beach?

Well today was some day. A few boats were able to get out and fish within 2- 3 miles of the Rockaway Beach, in line of the Marine Parkway Bridge and proceed to have one very memorable fishing day.

Fishing was just incredible.

Some bluefish were also mixed in with the bass, with this body of striped bass slightly larger in size then the striped bass we saw here the previous week.

All you needed was gold hammered diamond jigs, no crocs or anything else exotic. The bite was just that good.

4/15/10

The fishing was insane with gannets showing for miles. The fish were caught on jigs and bait with the jgs catching most fishn. The fish weighed between 12-15lbs. This body of fish has arrived stunningly early.

4/16/10

The fish again were there in numbers but the weather did not cooperate. Wind out of the southeast at about 15-20mph. All fishing was done on readings with very few birds to be found.

4/17/10

We decided to try something different with chunk bait and stay in Raritan Bay. We fished our traditional early spots and found fish in the high teens on bunker chunks. We ended with 8 fish up to 18lbs.

4/18/10

Once again, we returned to the ocean and found readings of fish but no gannets diving. Fishing with the jigs was the ticket as some healthy fish fell victim to the old reliable. Total was 40 fish up to 15lbs.

4/20/10

We headed to the same area in the ocean that we have been catching them and to our surprise not a bird with just some light readings. Got a call and ran to the north to find the mother load of birds and fish. Fish were caught on jigs again with about 30 fish coming to the boat keeping our limit.

4/21/10

We fished the bay again yesterday for very different results. Back at it again with some live bunker and chunks. First drift produced a follow up from a 12lbs fish. It was all down hill from there. We tried 6 different areas producing 1 bluefish

4/30/10 Twilight

Captain Anthony of the BARBARA ANNE reports that the fishing tonight was outstanding as he boated over 30 striped bass, along with a number of bluefish, just a short ride from the dock. With the hard winds of the last few days, pushed the bunker into the Raritan area. Fishing was done on bunker chunks, though live-lining also worked well. Big fish tonight weighted in at 26 lbs.

The Barbara Anne will be sailing with charters everyday. Anyone interested in booking future trips can contact Captain Anthony at:

1-917-921-0740

5/1/10

Captain Anthony reported that today's half day trip was excellent with customers catching 13 keeper bass and 25 bluefish on the chunk. The fishing is just a short ride from the dock and Captain Anthony says this is the best results he has seen in this area in the last few years. Their is a load of bait throughout the area and that the action at times is just non-stop.

For those fishermen who cannot fish for a full day, right now the 4 and half hour trips are a great way to catch a number of big bass and bluefish, since the fishing is just a short ride away

5/2/10

Today was the day the bluefish infested the Raritan Bay area. The big blues seemed to never stop the all day chew, and even though they landed 5 keeper bass to 16 lbs, and lost a number of bass at the boat, the bluefish action was by far the best of the season.

The amount of bunker in the area is definitely a great sign to see this early in the season back in the Raritan area. Night bass fishing has been excellent and that is another option for fishermen if they cannot make the day trips.

5/3 & 5/4

Captain Anthony said the last few days the striped bass and bluefish have not let up. Just 2 days ago, Captain Anthony had 18 striped bass up to 27 lbs.

Then last night, 8 striped bass up to 19 lbs were caught with all the bluefish you wanted to pull on.

Today's trip, the customers wanted to pull just on bluefish, and the big blues did not disappoint as the action was non-stop from when the anchor went in on till the worn fishermen finally wanted to go home. 2 keeper bass were also in the mix.

All fishing is being done on fresh bunker chunks with the ride just a few minutes from the dock in Great Kills.

So far this has been the best striped bass and blue fishing out of the Great Kills area that we have seen in two years as the combination of a short ride and very cooperative fish have bit well on every trip.

5/4/10 Twilight 5/5/10 Day

Captain Anthony of the BARBARA ANNE out of Great Kills Harbor said that the fishing in the Raritan Bay area remains very good. The May 4th night trip had loads of bluefish attacking the live baits all night. In between the bluefish, 2 keeper bass came up, but a few bass were lost during the fight and right at the boat. Both bass weighted in at 15 and 20 lbs.

Yesterdays day trip saw a 1/2 dozen keeper bass being boated, and another half dozen lost. The bluefish slam continues as they are constantly picking up the baits all during the trip.

Right now there is still a big number of bunker in the Raritan Bay area, and Captain Anthony did say that another body of bass are making their way up on the ocean side in this area. So far it has been a wonderful spring for the Raritan Bay fishing as the action is usually non-stop and only short ride from the dock.

5/6/10

We had the crew out from ESPN for a full day of Striped bass fishing. We decided to make a run down the beach to look for some fish. The morning started out rough with little or no bait to see but by midday the tide changed and bait showed. Miles of bunker for as long as the eye can see with fish corraling them.... The rods were bent. We ended the day with 4 bass up to 23lbs and countless bluefish.

5/7/10

We ran down the beach once again and the bait situation was scarce. It never showed and the fishing took a turn for the worst. We marked fish constantly but they had lockjaw. This new moon should change that considerably. Bluefish were never a problem and the bass never cooperated. All told, we had 2 12 lb bass on the jigs and some bluefish.

5/8/10 Twilight -- Cancelled due to 40 mph winds

5/10/10-Twilight

We headed to a different area and the fishing was slow on the chunk bait. We did mange 6 fish up to 18lbs but overall the action was slow. The daytime jigging has been very consistent with fish up to the mid-20's.

5/11/10 Day

We headed to an area where there were jig fish and I have to say Jigging is back with a vengeance. We are headed home early as the action was simply outstanding. All rods were bent for 3 hours as the guys put 40 in the boat keeping their limit of fish up to 25lbs. Pictures to follow

5/14/10

We were a sponsor boat in the Manhattan Cup. We had the crew from ESPN on board and the fishing started slowly. Once, we homed in on the birds it was lock and load fishing with 2 and 3 on at a time. After jigging 20 fish we decided to set up on the chunk and catch a few bigger fish. We managed to catch 5 more fi...sh as all fish averaged 12-18lbs. Not bad for a 4 hour day with just as many bluefish.See More

5/14/10 Twilight

We had Ron Sabota and friends out for a day of chunking in the bay. They managed to boat 5 fish up to 23lbs and a handful of bluefish. Great bunch of guys. We had fish swirling all over the top.

5/17/10

We had Joe V and group out for a day of bass fishing and what a day it was. The fishing was a little slower on the jigs but the live bait really got em going. We had 20 fish up to 32 lbs today. We left for the barn around 10:00 am and limits were had by 8:00am all on board.

5/17/10 Twilight

We the Tom Calvo group out for a night of bass fishing. With the current running just the way we like it, the fish didnt take long to respond. The fishing remained very consistent all night with the group landing 22 bass up to 33.25lbs. Congrats to
Horst on his first bass over 30lbs.

5/19/10 Twilight

We hat the Tom Tomasulo Group out for a night of bass fishing. The fishing remained solid with 12 fish and the largest going 31 lbs on chunk bait. The fishing in our local area has been very good and continues to produce fish in the 16-22lb range with a nice showing of some larger fish in the 30's.

5/22/10

We were one of 5 sponsor boats for the 4th Annual Michaels Striped Bass Tornament and what a great day it was. Fishing was excellent on the live bait with most fish in the 18-22lb class. We had hosted the Eric Group Charter for the tournament.

5/23/10

Again, we hosted the Eric Group for the tournament and the fishing did not disappoint again as all fish were caught using live bait and most fish were in the cookie cutter sized rang.

On a side note, fishing has really been stellar both in the bay and the ocean for the last month. Both trips day and night trips have produced both quantity and quality fish . This has been a pleasant surprise and the best spring fishing in 4 years with the best yet to come in the ocean during June.

5/24/10

We had the Joe V. group out for a day of bass fishing. The fishing was slower than its been. We couldnt fish fish where we wanted to go because of some left over weather we had from the weekend. the group still managed their limit of bass (8) to 24lbs on live bait.

5/25/10

What a difference a day makes! With the weather settled down we were able to fish an area where we have been catching them. As a result, Tim and Bob had 30 fish up to 30lbs using live bait. We will be back at it tonigh and the rest of the week

5/26/10 Twilight
We had an open boat for twilight striped bass and the fishing was good. The group managed to land 20 bass to 29lbs on the chunk and live bait. Good sign of things to come with plenty of bait in the bay.

5/27/10 Cancelled due to poor weather conditions

5/28/10

We experienced very good fishing again with the group landing 13 bass up to 30lbs. Unfortunately, the group managed to miss a few (about 15) on the day. Once again the fishing is remaining consistent.

5/28/10 Twilight

We headed out for a twilight of striped bass and had a great night. The guys combined for 20 bass in 2 hours up to 28lbs. All caught on live bait and we were back at the dock by 9pm. Great fishing! Great time!

6/3/10

We had Tom,Sam, Derrick and friend out for a twilight of bass fishing and it was a steady pick of fish all night with the group landing 12 bass up to 32 lbs along with our yellow-eyed demons.

6/4/10 Twilight

We had Lou, Horst and grandson and Frank out for a twilight of bass fishing and the night was very slow with a couple of bass and some bluefish.

6/6/10

We had Len and friends out for a day of bass fishing and again it was a far cry from what we have been experiencing. It seems that next wave of fish needs to show up. We have plenty of bait around just matter of the fish responding.

6/5/10 twilight

We had the Mike group from Pa out for a night of striped bass fishing. The fishing was a far cry from what we have been experiencing up to this point. We managed only 12 fish up to 25lbs on live bait

6/6/10 Twilight

Cancelled due to wind and thunderstorms

6/7/10

We had Neil Diamond along with a friend for a day of bass fishing and it was a slow grind. The group managed 3 bass up to 20lbs along with a mess of bluefish.

6/11/10 Twilight

We had Lou, Ron, Dean and Joe out for a night of striped bass fishing and what a night it turned out to be. The group managed 25 fish up to 38lbs using live bait and chunk.

6/18/10 Twilight

Epic! the only way to describe the bite on fish that you would only dream of. It was like a scene out of national geographic with bass pushing the bunker against the gunnels of your boat. the bass were crashing for on bunker for miles. Fish in the mid thirties to mid forties were coming to the boat. un beliveable bite with 20 fish coming to the boat and many more would have made it but the guys were new @ the livelining game.

6/25/10 twilight

We had the Lou group out for a twilight of striped bass fishig and what a night it was! the guys managed to catch 20 fish up to 35lbs on live bait.

STRIPED BASS TRIPS ON THE BARBARA ANNE 2010

THE SPRING FLOUNDER RUN OF 2010 WILL GO DOWN AS ONE OF THE WORST EVER IN THE NUMBERS OF FISH. THIS IS COMPLETELY OPPOSITE OF WHAT WE HAVE BEEN SEEING IN YEARS PAST AND WHAT WE THOUGHT THE FISHING WOULD BE LIKE THIS YEAR. THE INTENSE RUN-OFF AND ACCUMULATION OF RAINFALL AND SNOW COMBINED FOR A REVERSE REACTION TO OUR LITTLE FLAT FISH. IT SEEMS THAT RARITAN BAY AND ITS USUAL RELIABLE HAUNTS FOR THE BLACKBACK FLOUNDER WERE YIELDING LITTLE OR NO LIFE. TOOOO MUCH FRESHWATER!

WE WORKED HARD TRYING TO LOCATE A BODY OF FISH BUT IT JUST HASNT HAPPENED. BUT WE DID NOTICE FOR THE FIRST RECOGNIZABLE TIME, A HUGE BODY OF STRIPED BASS HAS APPEARED OFF THE BEACHES TO THE SOUTH MAKING FOR SOME STELLAR FISHING ON THE BOTH JIGS AND BAIT. THE FISH ARE TEEN SIZE FISH WITH GANNETS SPREAD FOR MILES......WHAT WE HAVE DONE TO KEEP OUR LOYAL CUSTOMERS HAPPY AND INTO FISH, WE HAVE SWITCHED GEARS AND IS NOW PURSUING STRIPED BASS FULL TIME UNTIL JULY. WE HAVE BEEN SAILING REGULARY FOR THESE FISH AND THE FISHING HAS REMAINED VERY STRONG. WE WILL CONTINUE FISHING FOR THE STRIPED INTO JULY TARGETING AREAS SUCH AS RARITAN BAY, BREEZY POINT, AND THE OCEAN BEACHES TO THE SOUTH.

FOR THE REMAINDER OF APRIL, WE WILL BE HOSTING AN OPEN BOAT AND THEN CHARTER ONLY FOR THE REMAINING MONTHS OF MAY, JUNE, AND JULY.

IN ADDITION, WE WILL BE BOTTOM FISHING IN MAY AND JUNE. WE WILL BE RUNNING 2 BOATS AND NEVER BE OVER BOOKED! CALL FOR MORE INFORMATION. AS THE FISHING CHANGES, SO DOES THE CREW OF THE BARBARA ANNE.

Report this postReply with quote APRIL 14th - Environmentalists Exposed - The $$$ behind Lubchenco and the PEW/EDF 'save the fish - destroy the fisher

Thanks to one of the commercial fishermen from New England for passing this along.

We have been talking about the power of PEW and other enviro-WACKO people & groups who have as their primary goal, to drive fishermen off the oceans. Here is some very interesting information about Lady Jane Lubchenco and the power behind this person now running NOAA/NMFS, and I should add the fishing industry into the ground.

From the:
AMERICAN ALLIANCE OF FISHERMEN

This page includes links to documents that show, without any doubt, that Jane Lubchenco, now head of NOAA, which regulates the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and a former top official at PEW and EDF, has a personal agenda with regards to America's fishing industry.

PEW Exposed Ocean Conquest
(PDF)

This investigation ties Jane Lubchenco and all of the recent appointments to top Fishing Management Councils on Ocean's Policy back to Oregon State University where many went to school together, taught together at OSU, or their close personal relationships during their tenures at PEW or EDF prior to her appointment as Head of NOAA. These so-called Scientists are heavily influencing our Congressional and Senatorial Officials, and even the U.S. President on the eradication of the local fisherman. They are influencing policy to give all fishing rights to foreign entities and large corporations.

PEW Fish Grants-PEW Legacy
(PDF)

This document reveals the truth behind the Pew Family, and their ownership of Sunoco Oil and their ownership of PEW Charitable Trust. It shows that there are questionable agendas by PEW Charitable Trust and the face they show the public and what is really going on when a Big Oil Company wants to make all policy regarding America's Fishing Industry. One has to question whether Big Oil (Sunoco) will act conservatively regarding fish stocks and biomasses or will they bow to their profit margin. I'll bet anyone a million dollars it will most certainly be their profits.

PEW Fish Grants-PEW money contribution list
(Excel)

This document is a list of monies/grants given by PEW to various Oceans Science Studies from December 1997- Present. It clearly shows that certain Scientists and Academics received large sums of money from PEW, yet they are some of the leading policy makers that influence our elected officials and the public.

PEW's - Dr. Daniel Pauley
(PDF)

This shows that Dr. Daniel Pauly, one of the top advisors on ocean policy to our Congressmen and Senators, has promoted Catch Shares, but he has been heavily funded by PEW and in essence has been paid over 20 million dollars to say so, soliciting PEW's agenda to influence Catch Shares as the ultimate answer to all of the fishing industries problems. Remember, Catch Shares will be eliminating 50-75% of the Southern New England Fishing Fleet and give ultimate rights to Private Industry, Large Corporations as well as Foreign Entities to be traded on the Stock Market, therefore, taking away one of the American People' last Public Resources Fish, and the privilege to fish for any American. It will prohibit any American from taking a Sunday afternoon fishing trip with their kids, because all the fish will already be owned by someone else.

More Grants Exposed
(Excel)

This document shows the infinite amount of monies that are being contributed to gain complete control of the Fishing Industry and America's Oceans. It is no wonder that Fishermen and their Communities cannot fight these environmental groups, they have an unlimited supply of money, and with all the heavily restricted catch limits and quotas, local fishermen cannot even afford to feed their families, let alone contribute to legal challenges in order to save their livelihoods.

MAR 15th - Research is called for to determine story behind winter flounder numbers

Doesn't this sound familiar.....more research is needed to determine the health and biomass of one of fish stocks? This is from the NATIONAL FISHERMEN, and has been up on their website since the beginning of the month, but now with the recreational season almost upon us, I just wanted to point this article out as to where the fishing industry and fishery regulators are as far as the fishing closure to the southern New England blackback stock.

The current analysis model managers use says the southern New England/Mid-Atlantic spawning stock biomass of 3,368 metric tons estimated in 2007 was just 9 percent of the target of 38,761 metric tons. But landings and discard mortality that year totaled 3,016 metric tons — and still, fishermen see winter flounder out there.Interestingly comparisons are made back to the 1960s when landings of winter flounder were at their highest:

The fishery’s historic peaks date to 1966 when nearly 12,000 metric tons were landed, and another boom around 11,000 metric tons in 1981. Blackbacks were easy to catch in the early 1980s and supported a tidy business among small-scale draggers. Many questions remain as to:- Whether there has been a shift northward in this fishery as a result of Bay and Harbor water temperatures rising over the last two decades dramatically effecting spawning- Stock biomass decreasing not due to fishing effort, but as a result of some natural phenomenon - Higher prevalence of predators in the mid-Atlantic region Bays reducing juvenile stockAt the end of this little article, this point was brought up:

During a May research cruise from Cape May, N.J., to Montauk, the Northeast Area Monitoring and Assessment Program inshore survey using Wanchese, N.C., skipper Jimmy Ruhle’s dragger Darana R saw a “two-to-one [ratio] in apparent percentage of winter flounder to summer flounder,” Brady says.Go here to read the complete article:

FISHERMEN - MARCH 2010 - Northeast Groundfish Research is called for to determine story behind winter flounder numbers

One does wonder on the health of this fishery, but I can point out that many hook and line fishermen are seeing more winter flounders being caught off the beach in depths of water greater then 50 feet now then

HAND OUT FROM DEC FOR DISCUSSION COMPARING 2010 REGULATIONS/PROPOSED ON SUMMER FLOUNDER/SCUP/BLACK SEA BASS

MARCH 16, 2010 - MEETING AT THE DEC - FINFISH REGULATIONS - RECREATIONAL/FOR-HIRE

Where do I start as I will try to walk everyone through this as best as I can. It was a very long day as I came home from working 16 hours the prior evening, along with making calls to get a issue tabled for the meeting with the DEC here in New York. Thankfully it was I found out that morning, and many fishermen will not appreciate that it was squeezed into a jammed packed card of fishery issues here in New York State. Thanks to PJR, and I will let him comment when he sees fit.

THE OUTCOME FROM THE DAY & PARTY & CHARTER BOAT CAPTAINS ATTENDING

We being Captain Greg Ocean Eagle who was working on his boat when we got together, and Big Bobby drove out in the morning and was at the DEC bunker at 1:30. We did not leave on till a little before 6 pm, and did not get back to Sheepshead Bay till after 8 pm where we needed Roller Roaster to ease the hunga' pains from bumper to bumper traffic and a meeting where many captains were muttering under their breath, 'this sucks'.Among the attendees I saw, starting from the Bay, Captain Greg Ocean Eagle, from Freeport area, Captain Mike 'Codfather' Barnett, and Nick 'NO TIME' Savine, Captain Dennis from the Pt. Lookout Princess Marie, from Captree, Captain Rob from the Captree Princess, Captain Paul Risi who sits on the MRAC, from Montauk the Viking Fleet, Steven Forsberg Jr, and Captain Carl, from the North Fork, Captain Bob Rocchetta, Captain Richie Jensen, Captain Phil 'from Fishy Business, Captain Dave Brennan from the Peconic Star, from Port Jeff, our own Captain Desi. If I missed any captain, you can let me know. The room was literally standing room only when this meeting started.

AT ISSUE FOR THE NYS ANGLERS & THE PARTY/CHARTER BOAT INDUSTRY

1- Main issue by far, was NYS measures for the recreational industry for 2010 on SUMMER FLOUNDER, SCUP & BLACK SEA BASS.
2- A new effort brought up by the west end fleet, spearheaded by Captain Greg Ocean Eagle and Captain Mike Barnett of the Codfather on re-opening the winter closure period for the party & charter industry.

Before the tabled issues were addressed, two main talking points were brought up

1- Captain Mike ' Codfather' broke the ice as far as moving the winter mid winter blackfish closure during the months of Dec/Jan to March.I will explain some back ground on this later on, since it will go along with the blackfish closure we have suffered under here in NYS for the last 2 years.
2- Captain Bob Rocchetta brought up that the council should look into creating a special sub-committee to examine and quickly implement some way to address striped bass mortality that is specifically due to by-catch and waste of our most valuable inshore game fish in this region. Bob recommended that the council should move pro-actively to address this since the striped bass season opens up within a months time. From what I heard on this quick talking point, I doubt the council was looking to address this at this time which of course is a shame as the industry is looking to reduce this unnecessary waste of fish.

QUICK SIDEBAR ON THE NYS SWL

During the early discussion a point was brought up that New York State as recorded by MRFFS has approximately 1,000,000 anglers. So far approximately 160,000 SWL licenses have been sold to recreational saltwater anglers.....if I heard that number correctly. Some gasps were made in the audience as a number of people realized, that our regulations in this state is based on this 'assumption', or shall I say, fuzzy data input of users of the resources in NYS.But just think for a moment....even if fishermen in NYS, made a be line run to log onto and purchase their SWL on the DECALs system and that number magically jumps to 250,000 anglers or even 300,000, it would still be one quarter and/or roughly one third the number of anglers that NYS is supposed to have! It does show how LOUSY any counting system is that NMFS uses whether to count people and/or fish! One charter boat captain from Northport brought up a point which myself and a number of people have stated here. Why doesn't NY adopt New Jerseys system which is based upon the federal mandate of a free registry, instead of the current one which is license based that charges a fee? Essentially, wouldn't this bring the number of anglers noticeably up who would sign on since it is free and giving us a more accurate number of saltwater anglers here in NY?Of course this makes much more sense, but that is another lengthy, exhausting and frustrating discussion for another time.

SUMMER FLOUNDER

As we have seen and has been pointed out, this one species is possibly the most valuable fish for the recreational industry along the coast.Just some quick talking points that were brought up:- Summer flounder regulations based upon cooperative management with ASFMC- NYS was UNDER their quota for 2009- Mid season closure was viewed as 'disruptive' as it took momentum out of the fluke season- Spring fishery was HIGHLY IMPACTED in reducing landings due to the weather- Result was that fewer trips by fishermen led to NYS not exceeding quotaMoving forward to the 2010 season:- Coastwide TAL (total allowable landings) increased- NYS went from a quota of 360,000 fish to 449,000 summer flounder- This is due to an increase based upon the 17% of the fishery that NYS has historically been allotted to the recreational industryWhat was the recreational community looking for:- Liberalize what is landed- Maximize the season (more days of fishing)- Add days to back end of the season (month of September)- Address mortality due to the amount of fish returned that are under the NYS 21' limitWhat could not be done:- Liberalize all three controls in what is landed AT ONCEa- Smaller legal sized fishb- Larger bag limitc- More fishing daysProblems associated with the current summer flounder regulations:- High size limits results in much higher mortality to fish returned - Non existent south shore bay fishery- Does not take into account disjointed peak fishing periods that exist from east end of the island to west end of the island, north and south shores- Impracticality of current size limit to even meet bag limitMakes to much sense approach:Captain Paul Risi who sits on the council brought up an excellent point that due to the increased number of summer flounder around in our state waters due to the rebuilding of the stocks, that mortality increases due to:1- more fish being caught 2- high size limit which forces anglers to discard more fishThis again points to this below:SOLUTIONS:- Bob Daniels who sits on the council - Possible slot limit to protect breeders- If Coastwide approach of a 16 - 18 inch slot was adopted (less mortality due to undersized fish being returned)The frustration built within the summer flounder fishery:- Liberalization of the LENGTH OF THE SEASON was best alternative chosen- NYS, and I should add every other state is:a- Fighting the 'PROCESS' as to how accurately fish are counted that are LANDEDb- No flexibility in MSA rebuilding time tablec- Insane biomass rebuilding number required to meet MSA based upon so called 'early 1930's (1932) stock sizeAgain what would make the MOST SENSE:- Managing summer flounder within NY water literally requires a management plan that divides the Island:a- East & West from Morichesb- Bay & Ocean Fisheryc- Early (east end) & late season (west end) balance- A very slow movement toward regulations that are liberalized as far as a:a- Smaller size like New Jerseyb- Slightly larger bag limitReality check in summer flounder fishery:- Depending on the area of the Island, RSA may be necessary to buy for late summer fishing

SCUP

Let me first point this out:- What was originally being considered was NO BONUS SEASON!!!!!- Stock rebuilt to 200 percent of target!!!!!- Conservation Equivalency HELPS NYSo what is NYS dealing with for 2010:- Based upon findings of the ssc (science and statistical committee) they recommended only a 10 percent increase. instead of at a POSSIBLE minimum of a more liberalized 30 percent increase in landingsPoints brought up:Captain Dave Brennan - His business is almost exclusively scup based during the season and if there was a possibility if a more practical 25 man bag limit was put into place since:- 10 fish during most of the year is really an 'unofficial' closed season especially to the east end fleet- Bag limit is KEY for the scup angler- Perceived higher bag limit lessens the impact of a larger minimum legal size fish requiredInteresting give and take:Bob Rocchetta - To Gilmore after Dave Brennan spoke - should and must be fighting for NYS fishermenGilmore - at this time we are following 'PROCESS' not managing fisheriesMakes to much sense:Bob Rocchetta - pointed out that the numbers being used don't take into account that even licensed fishermen don't FISH EVERYDAY for EVERYTHING, nor land limits when they do fish, and the numbers being used are hurting fishermenConsideration given to:-Shore bound anglers as far as season and size limitResults:- Possible loss of 10 days during bonus season from 45 days to 35 days- 5 less fish in bonus bag season- Still no 'open' May spring season here in NYS Again as pointed out and makes no sense:- Extremely short fall season- No winter fishing for NYS boats or anglersDave Brennan -a full month of October scup fishing should be looked atReality check in scup fishery:- Fleet must realize that buying RSA in this fishery might be a necessity now especially in the springWalk away value on scup:Extremely troubling since scup fishing has been documented at its' best since the early 1960s as far as size and number seen in NYS water. The typical demographic that traditionally has targeted scup is directly hurt by these regulation especially in the early and late fall season. A big push should be made here for the party and charter boat fleet to attain an uninterrupted longer season that goes through December.
BLACK SEA BASSBefore I start here:- It is a total travesty what OUR GOVERNMENT has allowed NMFS to do to this fisheryEmergency 180 day shutdown addressed:- Resulted in both commercial & recreational industry to apply pressure for review on status of the sock- SSC after reviewing stock status, revised TAL UP for 2010- Fishery is considered REBUILT at this timeSituation considered at this time:- Status quo as far as bag and size limitTalking points:- Questions remain to sea bass fishing in Federal waters during the year- Questions as to why there is literally no fall fishery with early closureReality check in sea bass fishery:- Fleet must consider buying RSA sea bass to continue fishing in the fall period

TAUTOG/BLACKFISH - MID WINTER FISHERY CLOSURE EXAMINED

Let me begin by again saying, through a call I made and through great help from a friend, we were able to bring this issue of the current mid winter fishery closure for blackfish here in NYS up for general discussion.During the meeting I was passed relevant paperwork and bullets from one of the fishermen I know concerning this, which will give you the HARD NUMBERS & FACTS. To set the table here:- Addressing blackfish means revisiting the action made by the council to address the FISHERY MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR TAUTOG, and these are the results within FINAL ADDENDUM IV which was wrapped up by late 2007:Recreational fishery comprised of both private boat anglers and the for-hire industry MUST:- Reduce fishing mortality to achieve F = .020- 28.7 percent reduction in overall fishinga. This was a FEDERAL MANDATEb. NYS would maintain Oct. 1st openingc. Closure during WAVE 1 ****d. Bag limit would be NO HIGHER then 4 fish per person****Due to the Closure during WAVE 1, 3 options were given to the for-hire industry:1- Jan 17 - Feb 28 & Fall Oct 1 - Dec 23 2- Jan 8 - Feb 21 & Fall Oct 1 - Dec 233- Jan 17 - April 30 & Fall Oct 1 - Dec 20All would result in a total reduction of between 29.0-29.2 percent in overall fishingInteresting point that must be kept in mind:- Data collection was based upon MRFSS sampling- MRFSS DID NOT SAMPLE LANDINGS DURING JANUARY & FEBRUARY (SAMPLING WAVE 1)Facts:- NYS recreational anglers was FORCED by Feds (ASFMC) to reduce landings by 28% or be closed****ASFMC (FEDS) laid out plan in which YOU MUST TAKE 28% from RECREATIONAL sector 'even if' you decide to close NYS COMMERCIAL TOTALLY = 0 (Commercial total landings equal < class="postlink pdf_link" onclick="this.target='_blank';" href="http://www.asmfc.org/speciesDocuments/tautog/annualreports/stockAssessments/2005TautogAssessmentReport.pdf" rel="nofollow">Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission Tautog Stock Assessment Report for Peer Review

SO............ The question here is what does a for-hire boat do during the year as open seasons do not necessarily coincide with peak fishing periods, or for that matter, decent fishing periods. To the west, unless you have bought scup RSA, the big fish that come during the month of May must be returned. Sea Bass fishing in federal waters during the summer and fall months are now in question. Blackfishing during one of the peak times of the year......possibly gone unless you hold a NYS FFL.As I stated earlier, I am exhausted, and for those out there who make their living directly from the for-hire fleet, it will be a very trying year. It seems that NY based boats may have to start going 'nomadic' and travel and find places in other states such as New Jersey in the early winter and Massachusetts during May till mid June to fish.I will leave it to the rest of you as far as how 'workable' these regulations are, but I do see increasing pressure placed upon striped bass to literally carry the burden of the fishing fleet in this state.Any corrections, talking points, or personal ideas, opinions, please post them. There are definitely no winners here.....Ps,thanks to those captains that took the time showed up, and fought for the fishermen here in New York. It is truly a battle here to have some semblance of a non disruptive fishing season here in New York anymore.

"RSA" Fluke comes to the Babara Anne Family in 2010:

As a follow up to the announcements portion of our 2009 newsletter, the following is a more in depth explanation of what RSA (research set-aside) means and what it means to you concerning requirements, cost, and finally, season openings and closings.

What is a RSA (Research Set Aside) Fluke permit?

The National Marine Fisheries Service sets annual quotas for most popular fish species. Up to 3% of the quota is allocated for research. This research set-aside is either used directly for research or auctioned off to finance research.

The Barbara Anne is a participant in the RSA (Research Set Aside) Permit program. The Barbara Anne will successfully bid on a portion of the Fluke quota which is set aside for research purposes. We will then have a permit from the New York State DEC to “collect and possess” Fluke. Under this permit we are allowed to fish for “RSA” Fluke outside the published Fluke Season in New York State with a different size and bag limit (We can’t use the permit during the open season). We are required to weigh the fish, clean the fish at the dock and report our catch to New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and National Marine Fisheries Service. Our season will end when our portion of the quota we bid on is met

The Research Set-Aside (RSA) program is utilized to encourage cooperative research between commercial fishing vessels and scientific researchers to further the understanding of our nation’s fisheries. Different fishery management plans implement this program differently. Most fisheries, like Summer flounder, Scup, Black sea bass, Tilefish, Spiny dogfish, Illex squid, Loligo squid, butterfish, Atlantic mackerel, and bluefish, set aside portions of the annual fishery-wide quota to research. Other fisheries, like Atlantic Sea Scallop and Monkfish, set aside days-at-sea from the annual pool of days for research. Researchers and commercial fishing vessels participating in RSA activities often require special exempted fishing permits (EFPs) or other authorizations for scientific research.

****Please review the following table concerning all open and closed season RSA Fluke fishing:(reflects 2009 limits)

May 15 to June 15 2009
Regular Season 21 inches Total Length 2 fish Daily Possession Limit
June 16, 2009 to July 2, 2009
RSA 20 inches Total Length 4 Fish Daily Possession Limit
July 3 to August 17, 2009
Regular Season 21 inches Total Length 2 fish Daily Possession Limit
August 18 to End of Year RSA
20 inches Total Length 4 Fish Daily Possession Limit

What does this mean to you as our customer in the way of fishing and cost?

As a result of this permit, you will now be able to legally harvest fluke until portion of quota is used up. Very simply, you will be fishing when everyone else is at the dock.
As a result of this permit, we, the Barbara Anne, have incurred operational costs that will be subsidized in part by you and me.
The following is 2010 fluke charters prices reflective of RSA expense:

Full day fluke charters(1-4 passengers) will go from $525.00 to $565.00
Open boat pricing will go from $125.00 pp to $135.00 pp for full day

Time for independent fishermen to start rebuilding their role in management?

Then please invest two or three minutes in visiting the Fix Magnuson Now website. Read the linked letter, supporting Congressman Pallone's and Senator Schumer's Flexibility in Magnuson

Management legislation, and sign on to the petition. It's at http://fs16.formsite.com/FixMagnusonNow/form793561462/ .

This legislation isn't going to fix all of our problems, but it's a good start. If we can't get behind this as fishermen - whether commercial, recreational or party/charter - the foundation funded ENGOs and the people they control are going to remain in charge and strengthen their hold on fisheries management and ocean policy.

Thanks for your attention:

NEWSLETTER 09' A YEAR IN REVIEW!

Recap of Fishing on the Barbara Anne 2009

As you know another great fishing season on the Barbara Anne has passed and because of YOU it was most successful. Well another fishing season is upon us. We are hoping to make this year an even more successful one than last. Our season started with the opening of the winter flounder. We experienced a somewhat normal winter regarding the cold temps in January and February. We also experienced an excessive amount of rain in all three months. The winter flounder fishing wasn’t the banner fishing we experienced in 08’ with catches of 70-90 fish not uncommon. In contrast, flounder fishing seemed to be much tougher with conditions consistently against you. With all else being equal, the Barbara Anne Crew still managed to stay ahead of the pack with 30-35 fish days. The best day experienced was 40 fish with 15 fish being the worst. Again, the fish proved to be in the 2-2 ½ lb ranges with some fish pushing 3 ½ lbs on the scale. We found ourselves really beating the mud for a successful day of winter flounder fishing. By the end of April, the fishing started to really taper off, with the flounders never really taking a foothold in their usual late April and early May haunts.

As we were winding down on the winter flounder fishing, the bluefish made their appearance with a vengeance only speeding up the exodus of these tasty flatties. We then started to pursue the Striped Bass on a regular basis with the bunker making a slow showing and the bass following suit. Raritan Bay, as it turned out proved to be a tough place to catch a bass in 09, but we managed to put it together with some real nice catches in the breezy point area on live bait. Although a struggle in Raritan Bay, it was not a total bust with some trips seeing upwards of 12 bass to 20lbs. As the month of May progressed, we started to concentrate our efforts on the ocean side with the spring bass migration underway. And as promised, we commissioned our 26 ft. center console Regulator outfitted with twin 250hp engines to pursue these fish in the ocean more effectively. Some real banner days and some not so banner days were experienced throughout the journey. We managed to bring many fish in the upper 30’s to the scale with the many fish averaging 22-27lbs. Most fish were caught using live bait.

The striped bass fishing seemed to last well into July with our last trips completed by the first week of July. As the striped Bass fishing was winding down the long awaited fluke season was upon us. And I must admit, it was long awaited, as this season proved to be the best fluke fishing I have ever experienced with both quantity and quality. With the fishing last year being excellent with quantity and some quality, this year dwarfed it by light years. The Barbara Anne saw some real nice flatties making it to the scale with the largest going 11 lbs and many fish in the 7-9lb class.

With the fishing very close to home, it made for a real treat for the remainder of the fluke season. Unfortunately, the phenomenal fluke fishing had to come to an end with the insensible closing of the season on August 17th. The clients of the Barbara Anne caught and released over 1300 fluke during the open season. With the month of September upon us, we had to switch gears to sea bass fishing. Normally, the month of September is a real good month to target both sea bass and fluke with migrations taking place within both species. The sea bass fishing was steady with many nice sized scup showing up to spice up the catches. Finally, as October approached we made the steady switch to sea bass and blackfish with eventually switching over to blackfish entirely. As the waters cooled the fishing got hotter with quantity and quality as well. The crew of the Barbara Anne and its customers saw fish up to 14lbs through the end of the season.

Regulations of 2009 and Announcements for 2010.

As the 2009 season progressed, there was talk of a saltwater fishing license on the horizon. Well, this talk became a reality and a saltwater fishing license is now needed to fish, along with a blanket license for the vessel of the Barbara Anne and its customers. As stated in a previous email, the Barbara Anne would not be purchasing the license for the remainder of the 2009 season but would be in effect covered for the 2010 season. As promised, I began the process of filing for the saltwater license to cover the Barbara Anne Crew and its customers.

During the 2009 fluke season, we experienced some phenomenal fishing. As a result, we saw a spike in customer bookings with most of the second half of the fluke season booked on an open boat basis. For this reason, I have decided to apply for an RSA(research set aside) quota for the benefit of our customers. In short and without having to get into technical jargon, this RSA quota will allow the Barbara Anne to sail daily for fluke during the closed part of the season. This will affect both NY and NJ customers. We can fish throughout the season until our quota is met. This means very simply that when NY and NJ close their season, we can continue to fish especially during the time of the year when these fish start heading offshore. If you have any questions regarding this quota just call me and I will explain this program in more depth and detail.

What’s new on the Barbara Anne during the 2010 season?

I’m glad to announce that currently, the Barbara Anne is up for sale and we are looking to get larger. We are looking for a larger vessel between 32-34 ft. This process can be very consuming because its not about any boat but more about the right boat and hopefully, we will have her in place by the fall if all the stars align correctly.

As for the center console that was in use last season, this addition seemed to go over very nicely, with most customers enjoying a short ride to the striped bass grounds.

In reflection, this year was a great success in every way. We developed many new relationships throughout the year. And the existing relationships grew stronger. While most charter boats experienced a decline in business, we managed to have our best year yet. This by itself is a real testament to level of service and fishing experienced by all customers.

“It is our mission to build long lasting relationships with our clients based on trust, service and an overall positive charter boat experience.”

We, the Barbara Anne Family would like to take the time to thank all of you for making this a great year and hope that next year will be even more promising in every way. We look forward to sailing with all of you in the 2010 season.

As a reminder, please select any choice dates for the upcoming season, as they will be booked the closer we get to the season opener. We will be sailing in March for spring ling and blackfish.

Tight Lines and good fishing,
